What Is The Fear Of The Lord?

WHAT IS THE FEAR OF THE LORD?

By Ryan Hicks

Job 28:28
28   And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

The fear of the Lord is not wisdom any more than to depart from evil is understanding. This verse is simply indicating that it is wise to fear the Lord, and it shows understanding when you depart from evil.

Psalm 19:9
9   The fear of the L
ORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

Unlike the fear that is of the devil, the fear of the Lord has no torment (1 John 4:18) for it is clean, enduring forever.

Psalm 111:10
10   The fear of the L
ORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

Proverbs 1:7
7   The fear of the L
ORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 9:10
10 The fear of the L
ORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of all godly wisdom, knowledge, and instruction. One cannot be wise and full of knowledge without a fear of God, because the fear of God is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom.

Ecclesiastes 12:13
13   Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

The whole duty of man is to fear God and keep His commandments. It is that simple! We are to fear the Lord and keep all of His commandments, not just a few of them (John 14:15, 21, 23; 15:10; 1 John 2:3; 5:3).

If one is righteous and desires wisdom and knowledge they will fear the Lord, because it is the beginning of both wisdom and knowledge. The wicked on the other hand are not so, they hate the fear of the Lord, and
"they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the L
ORD."
