WHATSOEVER IS NOT OF FAITH IS SIN!
By Ryan Hicks
Romans 14:22-23
22 Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.
23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
When walking in the light of God's will one must always consider the lawfulness of an action when they have any doubt about it. If one doubts the lawfulness of an action or omission, they need to seek the Lord and study the Scriptures to make an informed and accurate decision in their heart. They need to come to an informed decision that removes doubt as to the lawfulness of the action or omission.
What about those that doubt and continue on in that which they doubt? Are they not rebels that have denied the faith for their own selfishness? They are commanded of the faith to examine their potential choice and sin not. When they go outside the bounds of the faith and do something that they doubt that God would desire of them, the do sin, and are damned as a sinner, except they repent (Luke 13:3, 5).
Romans 14:22 says, "Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. It cannot be stressed enough that there is a great happiness and joy that comes in being free of doubt in the things that you do or omit to do. This does not mean, as some sin excusers have said, that one can just believe that any sin they commit is lawful. What you believe or do not believe does not change the word of God. Sin is going to be sin regardless of what you may think about it. This doubt is concerning things not specifically revealed in the word of God as sin or things that you may not have received light on from the word as of yet in your walk with the Lord. As a child of God, you are led by the Spirit of God, and you will have doubts about committing acts you should not commit or omitting to do things that you should be doing (Romans 8:14; Galatians 5:16).
There is no call for selfishness and a hardened heart that would cause one to continue on in the very thing that they have a witness against in their spirit. If you doubt the lawfulness of an act or omission then you are damned if you continue in the act or omission. You are only wanting to gratify your desires and are quenching the Spirit of God in the sin (1 Thessalonians 5:19). There are multiple commands that one breaks when they choose to go against the doubt and do something doubtful. So one is not accountable for merely that sin committed in the act or in the omission that was doubtful, but in the denying the word of God, the rebellion, the quenching the Spirit of God, the self-deception, and the selfishness of it all.
Let us take a common example of something that numerous people do that claim to be saved of God. How many times have you seen claimed believers smoking cigarettes? Is there honestly anyone that has been saved even for a moment that could possibly not doubt the lawfulness of smoking? These professed believers doubt that they should smoke and continue in it anyway to the denying of God and to the submitting to the flesh. This is the same flesh that the true believer has crucified "with the affections and lusts" (Galatians 5:24). Even through this they doubt and are damned as sinners as whatsoever is not of faith is sin. There is no room for games in the most holy faith. Either you are going to be submitted to the will of God and rule your life by it, or you are unsaved.
"So I have to not do the things that are doubtful in order to be saved, Brother Hicks." No, you will do these things because you are saved. The difference is monumental and of utmost importance. Should you choose, after you are saved, to continue on in the things which you doubt the lawfulness then you will be damned as a unrepentant sinner.
Secular movies, books, magazines, web sites, music, and other useless pursuits are all things that should be obviously doubtful to the saint of God. Are you one of those that has had doubts as to things you do or omit to do and continue anyway? It is my prayer that you will repent and get into right standing of God through the cleansing blood of our Lord Jesus Christ (1 John 1:9). When you doubt, do not just continue on in the things you have doubt about the lawfulness of. Refuse to commit such sins. Ask the Lord to give you power over this rebellion and humble yourself before the Lord. If you will not repent, you have no intentions of obedience to God, and remain in a sinful and damned state before the God of all the earth. No amount of pleading will change this, as all that the Lord asks for is but simple confessing and forsaking of the sin.
1 Corinthians 10:13
13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
God is not allow you to be tempted beyond something you can overcome. He is always there standing in your way and giving you a way out of the temptation, a way to walk in holiness. You are not alone in this battle against temptation, you are given the full ability to overcome!
I can think of no verse better suited to end this treatise with that would be any more fitting than Proverbs 28:13-14, "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief."
